Questions to Ask Before Hiring an Event DJ

Hiring a DJ is one of those decisions you only get to make once per event. These are the questions worth asking any DJ you're considering — including us — so you know exactly what you're booking.

What kinds of events do you usually DJ?

A DJ who specializes in nightclub sets isn't automatically the right fit for a wedding, and a wedding specialist may not be the best match for a sorority formal. Ask what events they do most, and whether they've worked events like yours — same size, same age range, same mix of formal and social moments.

For us, the mix spans weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, milestone birthdays, corporate gatherings, and school and university formals across Chicago and the North Shore. That range matters: a crowd that spans three generations calls for different instincts than a room of college students.

How do you build the music plan with us?

Your preferences should shape the night — not a preset playlist. Ask how the DJ collects must-play songs, do-not-play lists, and the feel you want for key moments like entrances, dinner, and the last hour.

A good answer sounds like a process: a planning conversation, a shared list, and a clear picture of what happens when a request comes in that isn't on your list.

What does your setup include?

Sound needs vary enormously between a backyard party and a hotel ballroom. Ask what equipment comes with the booking: speakers sized to your room, wireless microphones for toasts and announcements, and whether lighting — dance floor lighting or uplighting — is included or available as an add-on.

Also ask who handles setup, soundcheck, and breakdown, and how early they arrive. You don't want to be answering equipment questions while guests are walking in.

How do you handle the timeline and our other vendors?

An event DJ does far more than play music: entrances, toasts, cake cutting, and the send-off all need to happen on time and in order. Ask how they coordinate with planners, photographers, and venue staff before and during the event.

The goal is simple — you should never have to find the DJ mid-party to ask what's next.

How does your volume and style adapt to the crowd?

Dinner needs a volume that lets conversation happen; the dance floor needs the opposite. Ask how the DJ reads the room and adjusts — this is the difference between a night that flows and one that feels like a playlist on shuffle.

How does pricing work?

Most event DJs price by the event rather than a flat rate card, because hours, location, equipment, and add-ons all affect the work. Ask what goes into a quote and what would change it — event length, lighting, ceremony sound, travel.

At North Shore Beats, every quote is built from your actual event: share the date, venue, and what you're planning through the quote form, and you'll get a personalized quote rather than a guess.

When should we book?

Popular dates fill up — spring and summer weekends especially. If you already have a date and venue, reaching out early is worth it, even if you don't have every detail settled yet.
